A lot of contractors, owner and investors overlook the importance of getting design plans for their interior remodel or addition projects. We have made a list of the reasons why plans are an essential part of every project small or large.
Plans can save you money
The use of plans for your project can save you hassle and money by having a crystal clear idea of the project scope. A lot of times there is a difference in expectations between the owner and the contractor where the owner thinks he said everything they need in a project and the contractor thinks that they understood them. For example, an owner and the contractor may go back and forth about an idea like removing some cabinets or demolishing a wall. The contactor gives their quote based on what they believe they understood. When the project is in progress the owner is surprised that not everything they asked for is being done. This misunderstanding leads to complications where one of the parties involved needs to pay extra for the required additional work. The use of plans solves that by having everything laid out clearly leaving no chance for misunderstandings. The owner wants four outlets in a room but the contractor only installed two? go back to the plans and check to see what have been agreed on and who is responsible for the extra cost. This protects both sides and makes sure the project goes on smoothly.
2. Avoid a citation from the City or HOA
Did you know that almost every project requires a permit from the city or home owners association before you can go ahead and start on it? Except for small projects like painting or minor repairs, every project requires a permit regardless whether it is an interior remodel or an addition. Good news is, depending on your jurisdiction, these permits are usually easy where all is required is a plan that shows the existing layout and the proposed improvements. Why deal with the hassle of having to stop work till the permit is approved or a citation from the city or HOA or even possibly a lawsuit from the city if there is no compliance.
3. Plans are the cheapest part of your project
Compared to the overall project cost, plans are usually a small cost to the owner. You could be possibly saving thousands of dollars later on in your project so why not do it right from the beginning.
